The Baroness of Carini

Profili di donne, published in 1877, is a collection of six short stories based upon Luigi Capuana’s research into the psychology of women. In each tale, the narrator is a man who, while assuming a different name and occupation, is really the same person. The enigmatic human portraits in this work emerge from situations filled with the mystery and profound spiritual uncertainty that often ensnares men and women in love.

This collection is a product of the author’s early romanticism, but it clearly foreshadows his adoption of verismo (naturalism) as the underpinning of his later work. In fact, Profili di donne comes only two years before Capuana’s first novel, Giacinta, a psychological tour de force, which clearly established his naturalistic credentials and continued to display his phenomenal ability to analyze the human psyche. This skill would reach its apex in the novel Il Marchese di Roccaverdina (1903), Capuana’s masterpiece, which Buscemi has translated (Dante University of America Press 2012).

What, exactly, is boredom? It is a deeply unpleasant state of unmet arousal: we are aroused rather than despondent, but, for one or more reasons, our arousal cannot be met or directed. These reasons can be internal – often a lack of imagination, motivation or concentration – or external, such as an absence of environmental stimuli or opportunities. We want to do something engaging, but find ourselves unable to do so and, more than that, are frustrated by the rising awareness of this inability.

Awareness, or consciousness, is key, and might explain why animals, if they do get bored, generally have higher thresholds for boredom. In the words of the British writer Colin Wilson: ‘most animals dislike boredom, but man is tormented by it’. In both man and animal, boredom is induced or exacerbated by a lack of control or freedom, which is why it is so common in children and adolescents, who, in addition to being chaperoned, lack the mind furnishings – the resources, experience and discipline – to mitigate their boredom.

Let’s look more closely at the anatomy of boredom. Why is it so damned boring to be stuck in a departure lounge while our flight is increasingly delayed? We are in a

Osho, one of the best-known and most provocative spiritual teachers of our time, presents The Sutra of 42 Chapters —a scripture compiled in the first century C.E by a Chinese emperor. Two thousand five hundred years have passed since Buddha delivered the sutras on which this series is based. Using modern idiom, Osho extracts the kernel of Buddha's profound insight and understanding and presents his everlasting message to the contemporary reader in a manner that is lucid, straightforward and humorous. Osho weaves his own unique insights into this profound ancient wisdom and expands its meaning for our time, discusses the need for doubt and argument in the spiritual search, the nature of desire and the discipline of non-attachment. As we travel with the Buddha on a path of radical wisdom, we'll laugh or shake our heads at the folly, the ineptitude, or the
